Exactly. Obviously, it’s nicer to fall on a surface that gives more, but yes, the techniques have probably saved me any number of broken bones on harder surfaces, stairs, concrete, pavement, bricks, hardwood….

I’m glad you pointed out ukemi means receive, not breakfall.

Also interesting to read that they helped you on a hard outdoor surface. many people criticize ukemi saying it only works on a soft mat.

But the principles of it should be applicable anywhere.

An excellent analysis. It would be wonderful if you could extend it to the effects of physics in throws and maybe in ne-waza or shime-waza techniques too.
